Hey,

Took my driving test this morning, unfortunately didn't pass.

1. I went 25mph in a 20mph zone
2. Signaled too late, for a right turn at the junction after a bend.

That's it. Both were serious.

Are these normal failing faults for people or was my examiner a jobsworth?

Just to clarify, I couldn't see the junction is was turning into because it was after a bend. As soon as I saw the junction I signalled, but apparatly it wasn't soon enough.

Going 5mph over the limit was probably the main reason you failed, i got my test in 4 weeks, aaah dreading it!!

Speeding would be a mandatory failure, the examiner has no choice.
As for signalling too late because the junction was on a bend, go back and have a look - I expect there was a warning sign before the bend so you should have known it was coming up. If that's the case you failed to show that you were observing properly.
Quite often, if you have already failed for a serious fault, the examiner will mark you down for other things. He/she is trying to help by giving you a hint as to what elements of your driving you need to improve before you go back.

For the junction that you were to make the right turn into, did the instructor tell you about it ahead of time? If you were told, then yes, you waited to long. Other people can not read your mind and need time to make adjustments in what they are doing to avoid eating up your rear end with their front end. So far as 25 in a 20 zone, it's called speeding, and yes, it was wrong to be going that fast. If the speed limit is 15 mph, then you had best be doing 15, or less. Let the other people who want to play speeding ticket roulette play that game, you don't need to. The test was fair, you just didn't do a good job that was considered good enough to say that you would be a safe enough driver.

Perhaps you didn't hold up traffic as he said but the potential was there if you werent making reasonable progress. I passed my test on the third attempt. I rushed in a little on my first two without having enough lessons. We can take from that that time on the road is the key to being good enough. Some people say that examiners have a quota and to some extent this is unofficially true.If they fail or pass numbers that are outside the usual parameters for a given area they will attract the attention of their seniors. So it can be said you could fail one day and pass the next for identical driving. However,if you are good enough you will give him no opportunity to exercise discretion.

Going 25mph in a 20 mph zone is an offence and would give you 3 points on your licence and a fine if you were caught on a speed camera or by the police.
Signalling too late is driving with un due care and attention. By signalling late you could of caused other road users to have an accident because you were not telling them what your intentions were.
So yes he was righjt not to pass you. Next time drive within the speed limit and give other drivers plenty of warning.

No not harsh at all. You were driving too fast....illegally, which for pretty obvious reasons an examiner cannot give you a pass. Signalling too late would affect other road users and is therefore unacceptable - (unless the road was completely clear of ALL road users......a minor fault would be then be given instead of serious). Get a little more driving practice and try again. Good luck.

I understand how you feel from my personal experience. You made 2 honest mistakes. It's not like you did them on purpose. I'm pretty sure you had test/performance anxiety that caused you not to think straight-plus it's very early in the morning here in the US. Many people told me that when you 1st learn how to drive, they call it "heavy foot" & then you later learn to press a little lighter on the gas pedal.

I had a similar situation to yours. I was driving in an unfamiliar area, & it's kind of hard to explain, but do you know how sometimes you might have 2 lefts or 2 rights with the streets? 1 left might be like a normal left turn, & the other left might be a 1/2 left turn. Sort of like 1/2 left but 1/2 straight. Many streets are like that in New Orleans, but anywho, the instructor told me to turn "LEFT"-not the 1/2 left. So I turned LEFT, & he got mad, saying I wasn't following directions. If he wanted me to take the 1/2 left street, he should've specified it, right? That was my 2nd driving test experience, but luckily I passed. Oh, & he said I was driving too slow.

On the 1st test, the instructor didn't even take notes, & she gave me directions, & I followed them as best as I can. She straight told me I failed & LAUGHED in my face. She was one of those ignorant, ghetto people. But anyway, she said I failed because I was "nervous & acted like I was too scared." Well, I DID put on the application or whatever that I have an ANXIETY DISORDER. She also said I should NEVER drive-& ESPECIALLY not by myself.

I didn't let her discouragement stop me. I was DETERMINED to learn & keep practicing. I know it's a heartbreaker to find out you failed because driving is exciting & it's 1 more step towards control & independence.

After I got my license for taking the test the 2nd time, I rented a car the SAME day & practiced driving ALL across town. I even drove the next day on Mardi Gras out of town to another city. It's more relaxing to drive alone. Even when you're experienced, when you drive with judgmental people (including family & friends) who put you down, that still would make you nervous.

Yes, you can also fail for going at 20mph in a 30mph zone if there is no good reason for you to be going so slow.

Basically you failed because you committed a crime on your test. Speeding is against the law.

The speed probably, but i'd have thought that was just a minor. I failed mine because a bus flashed me and your not supposed to go when they do so i didn't and he failed me. Also a bus was on my side of the road on a very sharp bend so i braked hard and he failed me because the nose of the car weren't in the right angle to the road. You can't win with them they fail you for trying to be safe half the time.
Btw whats his problem ^^ you sit in a car criticising peoples driving for a living...talk about stupid!!!

25 in a 20 is same as 50 in a 40!, and the examiner would tell you in good time you're turning -so up to you to slow down when you know then your indicator wouldnt be late, ,its the 'signal' properly timed which is important,,brake lights??then indicator,no excuse 4 the speed its illegal
