They really didn't.

The thing is that by the time the Spanish had been thrown off the Filipinos had some taste of freedom, and they resented being under the rule of the US for a while.
After some fighting, they gave up on that, and now they love us pretty well.

The Spaniards has been in the Philippines for 999 years. By that time, the Filipinos has started to believe in Christianity, thus making the Filipinos very dependent on the Spaniards. Even though the Filipinos doesn't like the Spaniards because of their abuses, they hated the other countries more who colonized them, like the Japanese occupation. During that time, the country became poor and sided with the Americans because the Japanese are worse than the Spaniards. The Americans then occupied the Philippines. The Philippines has many disadvantages especially in economy. It's because of the poverty that the Philippines has no choice to agree to the demands of other countries.

Maybe because they brought them their religion (Catholicism) and language, although Spanish is not so widely spoken in the Philippines as it used to be.
But, anyway, most of the people in the Philippines still keep their Spanish first and last names.
Spain also unifed all the island as one country and named it after their king Philip.
However, maybe the strongest reason is that the Spanish tend to mix the local people, as the did in South America and a lot of filipinos have Spanish blood running through their veins.

maybe, spain occupied philippines for 300 more years so spain is the country that have most influenced philippines. filipino loved spain because it is not for the coming of spain that filipinos would be converted to christians. that's the good point. (one and only)

They were in the Philippines for a long time so I guess it's safe to say that most filipinos have a little Spanish blood in them, and filipinos are also mostly Catholics, a religion they learned from Spain.

I think they love the US more . Phillipinos are very much affected by American culture. The evidence of the english language throughout(they do not speak spanish),their system of government, the millions of dollars in aid plus protection from the US,the presence of fast food chains, quite a number of their women looking for penpals from the US and not to mention the corruption .Spain may have left a lasting impression in terms of religion, names and surnames, food dishes due to the lenght of the occupation but i do not see the evidence that they love it more not at this time.

There wasn't so much gold to be extracted. Also it was too far away for many Spaniards to wish to settle there.
