Persephone is. However in many legends about her, she is first the daughter of Zeus and Demeter (who was the goddess of Earth), and was kidnapped by Hades and made to go to the underworld.
Demeter searched everywhere for her, and Zeus tired of Demeter's sorrow and found Persephone, but Hades tricked Persephone into eating some pomegranate seeds which forced her return to the underworld during different seasons of the year.
This, to the ancients, explained the seasons-- some seasons reflecting Demeter and Persephone's joy at being re-united (Earth at her finest), others their sorrow at parting once again (a barren Earth).
It's a nice story, and one you can read yourself when you scroll down far enough in Wiki.
