Most stores set their own return policies in the US. Most e-retailers also set their own policies. Both appear to have different types of return policies during the holiday season.

I don't think there are "laws" pertaining to this. It is the stores policy. Most require you to have the receipt.

in new zealand if product is faulty proof of purchase is required then product must be repaired or replaced if product is within warranty. for change of mind the courtesy period is 14 days at dick smith electronics
