I will arrive at London airport with a choice to get to Heathrow or Gatswick but don't know how to go to Ashridge , Hertfordshire

From either airport you can get a train to London, then go by underground to Liverpool Street Station, in the east.
Trains run from there to Cheshunt, which I think is the closest station to Ashridge. It takes about half an hour. You can look up train times here:

If you're talking about the National Trust estate in Hertfordshire called Ashridge the nearest railway station is Tring. From Heathrow Airport take the railair bus link to Watford Junction Station from which there are 3 trains per hour to Tring. From Gatwick Airport take a train to Victoria; then the Underground Victoria Line to Euston; then a London Midland train to Tring. Heathrow is much closer than Gatwick.Ashridge is two miles from Tring Station.

Hire a car at the airport. It is a lot less hassle, you won't have to wait around for connections, etc and it will take you straight to your destination.
