There is a trick where you "separate" two elastic bands (one seemingly goes through the other). You start by stretching one between your left thumb and forefinger and then thread the second behind it and then stretching it with the same digits on the right hand. I have found explanations on how to do it online but they are confusing and I get lost. Anyone know an easy way to explain this?

Try this. hold one rubber band between your left thumb and first finger. The other rubber band, which should be behind the first of course, is held between your thumb and middle finger. don't start with your first finger.

The routine starts with you pulling both rubber band away from each other, just to show one is behind the other and there's no way for it to come apart.

As you're doing that, your right hand first finger slip into the loop that is held by your right thumb. Keep it there.

Now, you wants to bring your hand closer together again (you're initially doing the action of stretcing them apart). As you do this, in a fast motion, strectch out your right hand first finger, and release the middle finger.

So what you're doing now is, on your right hand where the band is initially held between your middle and thumb finger, now becomes thumb and first finger. This new stretch that you form is now outside of the other band. Your right hand rubber band is now free.

That is the basic mechanics of the trick

However, you would want a little misdirection, so you cannot just show the rubber band goes apart as you do that. even as the rubber band is apart, you're still holding both next to each other, so pretend that they are still stuck, move the rubber band up and down, left and right, and show the trick by pulling it apart.

The biggest misdirection in this trick is all your large movement. you pulling them, then move both hand together again. That big movement is use to cover your smaller movement of swtiching the loop to your first finger and thumb finger.
