I can play the flute and have been for 10 years. its not about holding your breath, its about the placement of your lips and being able to manuver them so the sound comes out right. the breathing will come with practice

I'm surprised people have danced around using your diaphragm but not actually using the term...it's breath control that allows you to play the flute.
You don't hold your breath....it's air that makes the instrument produce sound.

Using a steady stream of air, the player releases it across the tone hole of the flute. As you play, you learn breath control and you can adapt well with practice to different situations that call for different breath control.

A good practice that a band teacher used to do with us is balancing on a large bouncy ball leaning against a wall. We would practice exhaling while slowly creeping closer to the wall when we exhale for a certain amount of time. That's a great physical example of breath control. You develop it through playing and breathing exercises.
Another example of breath control is how a runner uses it--or anyone that utilizes extended cardiovascular exercise. You see runners breathing into their nose and out of their mouth evenly so they don't wear themselves out and get side cramps.

Of course many people can! The breathing capacity in fact increases if you keep activating it to the maximum by e.g. playing a wind instrument! I'm only 152 cm tall, but I have been playing the flute for 20 years now!

The thing with playing the flute is that it will help you improve your breathing... for example, when you begin you may not be able to sustain a note for long, however with practice and training you will... It does not take long to improve and gain the ability to sustain a breath.

As you learn, you will work out the optimum position and angle for the airstream... while this may seem complicated its easier done than said!

Anyway, good luck
and let me know how you go!

I definitedly can not. I tried and my embouchure is not right or natural for the flute.

"Hold your breath" is the wrong term. You take a breath then release it bit by bit as you blow across the mouthpiece. The strength of your breathing muscles and the natural capacity of your lungs increases little by little, as is true of all things we pracise.

lots of people can.

its not about holding your breath, its better if you can do circular breathing but dont worry about that. just play and your breathing will get better
