It just means they earn a lot of money. I'm not sure of the exact origins of this phrase, but it makes me think of having so much cash flowing in that you could literally gather/rake it into a giant pile like leaves.

Rake isn't a phrase. A rake means a rogue, or immoral person, or to put it simply, a someone who just might rob you blind, then run away with your mom.

Rake in means dragging in the money from all directions to themselves ~~
