You are supposed to you won't get "zapped" as such but it could surge the power if your house was struck and that in turn would blow your computer the odds are next to nothing you have more chance of being hit by a bus but it is a risk regardless of the size its up to you

Unless you're going to unplug it every time it rains don't burden yourself with it. Get a surge protector and be sure you have insurance to cover lightning. You aren't in anymore danger than if you were watching tv. Besides, what are you going to do? Huddle in a corner every time it storms? Take a stand! Tell yourself and the world that you will not go quietly into the night, that they can take away your clear sky, but they can't take away your freedom! Then moon the sky and hope you don't get hit by lightning...

Not just turn it off, unplug it. I had to replace my "motherboard" or some such nonsense and it cost a bloody fortune. I turn mine off and unplug it every day before I leave for work because I live in Florida--the lightning capital of the world!

I kinda lost a computer once like that. I also lost a tv and the phone system...all during the same storm. So, I guess we are supposed to unplug them or something.

It is best to turn them off and unplug it from the wall, as well as your phone and fridge. I live in the tropical storm area and that is what is advised. However while in New Zealand I didnt turn off my PC while a storm was on and BOOM, there went my computer, so unless you want to risk it... unplug.

lightening can make some damage happen. invest in a surge protector even so, turn the computer off when lightening is near.

Do you have a surge protector?? It is always a wise decision to turn it off or it might get blown.
