This question has been answered wrongly a thousand times as it has been asked a thousand times on Yahoo answers.
It has nothing to do with physics. Websites like - http://www.sciencemadesimple.com/sky_blue.html are spreading lies, trying to fool our generation with there easy answers.
The actual reason is totally different and and is a secret secured by the Vatican and Dan Brown is going to expose this in his next book.
But now after years of biological research doctors are sure that calling the color of sky 'blue' is a disease that homo sapiens inherited from primitive homo erectus clan. Animals are free from this visual defect and see the sky in its original color which is maroon.

The blue color of the sky is due to "Rayleigh scattering". As light moves through the atmosphere, most of the longer wavelengths pass straight through. Little of the red, orange and yellow light is affected by the air.
However, much of the shorter wavelength light is absorbed by the gas molecules. The absorbed blue light is then radiated in different directions. It gets scattered all around the sky. Whichever direction you look, some of this scattered blue light reaches you. Since you see the blue light from everywhere overhead, the sky looks blue.
As you look closer to the horizon, the sky appears much paler in color. To reach you, the scattered blue light must pass through more air. Some of it gets scattered away again in other directions. Less blue light reaches your eyes. The color of the sky near the horizon appears paler or white.

O3 also known as ozone three oxygen atoms linked together not very stable as it breaks down with intense UV light which it also blocks giving it the appearance of a blue color . google ozone for more information .
