Hell wouldn't you cry to if you were just taken out of a nice warm place, naked, spanked on the rear and had something shoved up your nose and mouth?

It is how they communicate, they are probably in some distress and it's the natural call to the Mother to hold the baby, if the baby didnt cry (this is going back to animal times when extincts kept us alive) then the Mother always think to pick it up. Also the baby may be hungry and would cry for food. The baby needs to make the first attachment to it's Mother so crying would be the best way to say 'oi pick me up and look at me I need to see you and be close to you physically and emotionally'.
Also to 'Who Me?' the 'Moro reflex' is more about a loud noise or falling sensation, the babies arms and legs will shoot out and they often will cry but this isn't the same as crying when they are first pushed out, but yeh that reflex is an interesting one; it's the first and only fear that is installed into us as an exstinct. Also sometimes there is no crying with this reflex, although if there is also no physical movement from a loud noise or falling sensation then something isn't right It explains why some babies don't cry at birth but still have the arms and legs shooting out when the Moro reflex is activated, it proves that this reflex is not the only reason why they cry at birth, there are other psychological reasons.

Not that I remember being born, but what a big change of environment!
I would also think that being born is slightly traumatic and being that babies have no other way to communicate (besides crying) it seems pretty logical.

I believe it's like the Morrow reflex; they just do.
Remember, the lungs haven't been inflated before, they're no longer in the dark surrounded by warm fluid, everyone's poking them ... You'd cry wouldn't you?

For one, it get's their respiratory system up and running. And for another, wouldn't you cry if you just emerged from a warm comfortable place into a totally alien world.
