Ditto - Ive mentioned mums on the school run only once on here before, and considering Ive been on YA forever I hardly think thats excessive! Get a grip. Youre obviously a mother who cant be bothered to walk the 500 yards to school each day.

Natasha - Get a grip. How many times do you hear on the news of a child being snatched on their way to school. Not since the McCanns used that tired line have I heard such rubbish.

Yes it probably would with the amount of psychopaths out there, I'd rather make sure myself that my child is safely in school. thankyou very much.

People think the world is more dangerous than when we were children, It isn't it is safer. Apart from the risk of being run over by a mum in an agricultural limo, that is.
There aren't more murders abductions and the like, there is just more press coverage. Look at the amount of coverage just one case got.
Experts are warning we are bringing up a generation with no sense of danger by over protecting them. People who ferry their kids half a mile just because of fears of non-existent dangers should be ashamed as they are hurting their children.
A friend let her 7 year old walk ahead of her to school. The seven year old wasn't really trusted to be on her own as her mother could see her the whole time- but she didn't know that. My friend was reported to social services by other parents. And for those who go hard on authorities laying down ever more restrictive rules- the social services were on my friends side!

I walk my kids to school, my daughter in the morning and my son in the afternoon for nursery. The school is a 10-15 minute walk from where we live. I don't actually drive so I have no choice in the matter, but even if I did drive I would walk them to the school. The traffic up there is atrocious in the mornings and the journey would take twice as long by car. Some mums have to drive if they are working, but you do get some lazy ones who would rather drive than do the 10 minute walk.

I agree with you. When I was young I used to walk 3 miles each way to school though never alone, there was always a crowd of us that left our homes at the same time and met up at the corner or the next street. We only ever got the bus if it was raining heavily.
When my elder boy started school he didn't want me walking him to school. I insisted for the first week but then a neighbour's son who was 5 years older than him volunteered to walk with him and that was fine by me, as long as he called for him. His school was only a 10 minute walk away.
I think you have to give kids the chance to be trusted and the chance to grow up without fear. Make sure they are aware of the dangers of accepting lifts, only crossing at manned crossings, always walking with at least one friend etc. but for goodness sake, don't turn them into a generation of neurotic kids scared of their own shadows.
No wonder so many of today's children are unfit and overweight - being driven to and from school must be a contributory factor.

Just DON'T get in their way!!! Best keep off the road altogether. Are you a Dad on the school run?
When my own children were young, one had to get to school between 8.40 and 8.50. The other had to be at school a mile and a half away at the 8.45 to 8.50. (the schools had got very funny about children arriving any earlier, elf and safety) AND I still had to get to work by 9.15.
I was really worried about how I was going to manage, even with a car. My husband said. 'Just tell me what you want me to do" I was so relieved to have some support. Then he went on to say '"And I'll tell you why I can't do it!"
Happy Days!

Before you tell me to "get a grip", I agree with you entirely :-)
There is even what appears to be a competition amongst mums on their school runs... like... "...you're not seen as being married to a successful man unless you drive a 4-wheel drive to school..." One of our neighbours, a mum, told us that she was asked by other mums in the same school ".. when you pass your driving test, what car will your husband buy you - a 4-wheel drive or a BMW ?" -- She answered -- "a Ford Focus !"

My 10yr old daughter walks to and from school on her own. We are not too far away from the school, it's only about 10minutes to walk it. However I have to take my 3yr old son in the car as unfortunately I cannot afford not to work and have to drop him at school for 9am and then get to work for 9:20am!. If i had the luxury of being a stay at home mum or even to work part time, I would walk him to school or we would go on our bikes.

I would if only there was one!!! I hate getting stuck for 1/2h or more every morning and each way, but I don't have a choice where I live.
Also lots of mothers drop their kids on their way to work, so it's necessary to go by car to go on.With some schools only allowing the kids in at 8.45am you're cutting it thin if you then have to wait for the gates to open and go back home.

I agree with you in the respect that the mothers should walk their children to school. BUT and it is a big but. It does not seem safe enough theses days to let young children go to school alone . Bus or no bus

My childrens school doesn't have a school bus run, so yes I do walk the youngest to school and I will until I think she is at an age where she can walk with friends.

Well my eldest walks with her mates and I walk my others to school as it is minutes down the road. But I think if we lived miles away from their schools then yes I probably would drive them. My parents couldn't drive and I always had to get buses so I know how sucky it is...especially in the bad weather.
