why do the australians and americans just chuck all the laundry on cold water altogether?? cold water does not kill germs or combat stains or take smells out. you at least have to wash them in warm and if not then hot. also doesnt chucking everything in at once whites colours darks doesnt it stretch some fabrics and dye onto others. this really bugs me. clothes are not clean or taken care of.

do you do this and why? does it annoy you if you dont do it?

maybe not everyone has the time to sort laundry and wash everything seperatly? why wash 3 small loads of laundry when you can wash one large one? would waste alot more water/energy too.. I personally wash everything in cold or warm water, most everything goes in together unless its really dirty or dressy clothes. Most people dont wear there clothes long enough, or do enough to make there clothes that dirty that they would need to be washed on hot water everytime. it just wears out your clothes too quickly.

I think the selling point is that using only cold water saves energy, and they do make some detergents now that supposedly work well in cold water.

As for killing germs, unless your water is scaldingly hot, the heat itself won't kill that many-- it's the agitation and the detergent that remove dirt and germs.

That being said, I only use cold water for things that I'm afraid will transfer dye, have a stain (hot water sets some stains), or which need very delicate treatment. Everything else gets warm or hot water, depending on the fabric and color.

I prefer to save energy by washing only things that NEED washing and by running full loads instead of washing one or two items at a time.

Some people just don't care about the fabrics they wash or are too lazy to change the dial it does annoy me sometimes especially if I don't use the right care or detergent or soap to clean my laundry and if I stuff too much in the washer, cold water will not stretch clothes but will stop them from fading and the colors bleeding, cold water will actually make your clothes last longer, but yes I agree it will not kill the germs, but you don't have to use hot water in order to kill germs, just adding White Vinegar to the rinse water will kill the germs and protect your laundry and is touted as being the best all purpose cleaner and disinfectant in the world it will also set dyes and whiten whites, Clothes dryers will also kill the germs so you really don't need hot water to do this

wash cloths in cold water all the time, they get clean, maybe you need to change your soap, germs die any way in the air,
dont strech them any more than hot water does, diffrent colors wont run in cold water, but will in hot ,
been doing this for yrs,
oh ya stains wont set in cold water ,
