While many Americans may have more money than people of other countries, you have to understand how much it gets us by here. The U.S. isn't cheap, nor is travel.
The size of our country also plays into it. We are one of the larger nations of the world. We can travel hundreds of miles and still be in the same state.
Also, many of us simply don't have time. Americans lead a ridiculously hectic life. That's partially why we have lower life expectancies than other developed nations.

With all of that said, I still plan on traveling the world, and Thailand is indeed on my list of places to go. :)

It is a myth all right - chances are the number is even less than 10%!

To leave the US through borders, US citizens need to hold a valid US passport. The number of US passports issued to individuals in the US is less than 10% of all US citizens, and some of those passports are never used.

I don't have exact the figures, but you can probably find out from US State Department

If you go by passports issued, probably 10%. However, I would venture to guess that a large percentage of people have been to Canada and/or Mexico, which doesn't require a passport.

Yeah I agree with the guy about the passports. I think they make it hard to get out here so you can't escape taxation. lol.

It's a large country, so that's part of the reason.
