My 2005 Mazda RX 8 won't start - it turns over- but won't start. I was told it may be flooded- is there a way to start it without brining it in for service?

Yes, you sure CAN flood fuel injected cars. And the Rotary engine is prone to this due to its design.

A rotary can flood if you do a "cold shutdown" of the motor. This is where you start the motor and either stall it or stop it in the very early seconds just after starting. Really efficient fuel burn requires the temperature of the motor to be higher than you see after the first few seconds.

In a Rotary unburnt fuel pools in the bottom of the rotor housing. This drastically thins the oil sealing between the apex seal and the housing. Because of this you lose compression which makes it difficult to start the vehicle. Also, the spark plugs get soaked in fuel making it difficult for them to produce a good spark.

The RX8 manual recommends pushing the gas pedal to the floor (which signals the fuel system to supply no fuel at start-up) and crank the motor for upwards of a minute. This tries to force unburnt fuel out the exhaust port. Then let the engine sit for a minute or so and try starting again.

If this doesn't work you can pull the plugs and dry them off and inject a bit of engine oil through the spark plug holes and try again.

Or...get the car towed to a Mazda dealership...

Starting with the Series 5 RX7 (89-91), flooring the gas and cranking it usually does unflood it. But there is a trick that works on ALL rotary engines. I'll use my 1987 RX7 (Series 4) as the example.

Under the hood, there is a block of fuses. By pulling the one furthest in (EGI COMP) and cranking it, it'll cut the fuel flow and unflood the engine. Put the fuse back and it should start up. If not, pull the spark plugs and wait 10-15 minutes.

There is one more way, but it involves putting automatic transmission fluid in your engine, which could do some damage to it if you don't change the oil ASAP. I wouldn't reccomend doing so, unless all else fails..

Cnshinn is correct. A trick we used to use was putting a clamp on the fuel line (there are 2 fuel lines, make sure to clamp the incoming line) then crank to clean out the engine. The problem is most likely to occur if the car is just started and not warmed up, for example to move car out of driveway, then turned off. Also make sure you use unleaded regular for winter driving. It starts easier.

i might flow with the R X 8 simply by fact these days Pontiac's vehicles have not been impressive and their GTO pisses me off simply by fact it seems no longer something like the unique GTO. They base the seem from an Italian vehicle(what the hell? base it from the GTO or call the vehicle by yet another call).
