Hi Turtle. This did happen to my husband. He has a brain injury that caused him to lose about 13 years of his life and his short term memory (like on the movie: 50 First Dates). He woke up so scared that he started lying. He'd make up stuff to tell the Dr's and Nurses. He even tried it with family members that he didn't recognize. He regained a lot of his early memories on up to our marriage and the birth of our daughter. We separated when she was 3-years-old and that's how he remembered her. He doesn't remember his sons very well though. Or their mother. What he does recall, scares him to death.
I have to tell you, that everyone fears death like it's the plague. And what folks don't know is that sometimes there are worse things than death. Amnesia (whole or partial) is one of those things. Because it's like a living hell. Not just for that person... But for the loved ones too. Just look at the Reagans.... My DH watches TV day and night to keep his mind occupied and he sleeps a lot. Sleeping is a form of escaping.....or a safe place.
Well, that's what we've been dealing with for that past several years. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

only if i woke up in some hotel room or back alley. If i woke up in a house which I would hope was my own house I would probably just stay there at least for a while. Maybe a day to see if anyone came to see me or called me and then I might figure out who i was. of course if i woke up in my own house my husband would probably be in the bed with me and then I'd probably scream and ask him where I was and stuff. Lots of scenarios that could occur to make the circumstance of what to do different. Ok yes I am thinking too much.

The biggest problem is if it is who you are and your past. Some report to the police station first. or go to the hospital or end up on the street, living under the Viaduct in a cardboard box.Especially if most of there recognizances are gone. They may ramble on about nothing and make no cents of what they are saying.Or all they can do is mumble and spit.Back in the 80's this happened to my grandmother after a routine Collen cancer operation. She did not know who she was, or her kids,or her husband. Some objects she know what they where good for but did not know what to call them. She could koock an egg but she did not know its name. She referred to her husband as, that old man.My other grandma had a stroke. She knew us as her baby's, and thought we where her kids. my baby's is all she could say, and look at my Dad,my Uncle, and Ant. with a puzzled look.

Hello,
After I got my head split open I had 6 months of that crap!
Now at least I no where I am and who I am, but as for what day it is, what appointments I have, what bills needs paid forget it.
It is very scary!
Yes one would want to get to the doctor, not by driving though. Oh and the person who is supposed to be helping you out make sure he or she is not a thief!!

How would you go to the hospital if you didn't know what one was?
;]
I'd probably look for the nearest person and ask who they were, who I was, where we were, that sort of thing. Hopefully if you're in that situation, whoever you see can fill you in.

i was onb topomax so it is not a question of what i would do but what i do do. those are the side affects many users of this prescrip. face every day. we just deal w/it and try to write every thing down. sometimes it's hard to believe the lot life has dealt us though, you wish it were a joke. if it's only hypothetical for you, be very thankful.
