I don't know when Bangladesh started playing one day cricket but I remember once seeing their one day game against Pakistan in 1997 and they displayed extremely poor performance and were all out for 134 only.

10 years later in 2007, they are still pretty much the same and continue to lose heavily against almost any test cricket nation.

They went on a tour of newzealand few year back in 2003 or 2004 and the result was disasterous. The tests were over even before 3 days.

My question is that since its been at least 10 years they've played one day cricket, why they continue being so weak?

In the subcontinent all neighboring bangladesh countries play good cricket -- India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Then why Bangladesh still left behind?

In my view the reasons of our poor performance in almost all the games, and cricket in particular, is as follows:

1. The people of Bangladesh are a bit shorter and weaker built than the Indians and Pakistanis. Sri Lankan are exception since there population is much lesser thereby getting more per capita food for taking proper care of their nourishment and stamina.

2. Higher proportion of educated population in neighboring countries are producing better base-materials for rigorous training in any field where intelligence needed to groom better players.

3. Lack of proper theoretical classes as well as practical training and proper gears with fields for the players in one part and also lack of interest to abide by the disciplines, rules and regulations during training on the other part makes it difficult to get quality players in Bangladesh.

4. The ego plays heavily in our player's mind who try to emulate personal traits of their counterparts in neighboring countries, but not the techniques and other positive attributes those champion-materials possess.

5. Lastly, the mother nature also makes life difficult for our players to come out and play when there are rains in more than 4 months those gets our fields more soggy due to the alluvial soil (fine fertile soil left behind by a flood, esp. in a river valley) makes the playing ground unsuitable for practicing.

I had been to Karachi, Pakistan for fairly long time till 1973 and saw the school children playing cricket on routine basis during weekly holidays in plenty of fields available to them throughout the years as the weather in Pakistan are much dryer than what we have here in Bangladesh.

So, unless we can pool talents from School level age through routinely held competition and taking them to special schools like we have one in Kaliakoir, Savar, Dhaka, we can not hope to have consistently good performing cricketers, for that matter any other kind of players coming out from Bangladesh.

PS. Someone commented that we do not have the passion or frenzy in our public for cricket, which is not true. If you were here when Bangladesh first beat Pakistan in world-cup preliminaries in UK and then beating India in similar fashion in last ICC WC 2007 and then the South Africa, you would have seen the zest in our people for the cricket. Football has now taken backbench in terms of arousing enthusiasm among the general populace here.

" 1) He played for a long time and more matches than any other batsman so that’s why his records like most number of runs, Hundreds and fifties etc etc are nothing but higher than any one. " It's not longevity, it is consistency which allowed get those records. When it comes to judging a player's greatness over his career, it's necessary to look at his entire graph rather than his peak. It's not so much how high a player gets as how long he stays there. "(2) He faced too many balls selfishly to get his 100th ton against Bangladesh (Asia cup)" Actually, that wicket didn't helped to get the runs. India lost the match because of the poor bowling. They are not able to handle the grip of the ball. if you remember the match, during the last overs, our pacers especially Praveen kumar bowled easy full tosses. Ban need 33 from 3 overs. Irfan : 48 over - 17 runs, Praveen kumar : 49th over - 14 runs. match lost. "(3) India lost many games where Sachin scored a hundred." The main problem : When people made an assertion they can't see other angle. ● They made an assertion that, when ever sachin scores an hundred, India will lost the match. So they don't understand the actual facts. ● Of the 49 ODI centuries that Tendulkar has scored so far, only 14 such three-figure scores have ended up in a losing cause for India, while in 33 matches, where the batting maestro has gone past 100, India have emerged victors. If 14 is bigger to say "whenever he scores a ton ..... " then 33 is much bigger to stop the myth "whenever ..... " "(4) Sachin didn’t perform well in crucial matches." The crucial & pressure situation defined by criticizers as "whenever he gets out at low score, it's a crucial match, & pressure situation but he didn't handle it well". This is ridiculous. You won't feel any pressure when he stays there. But you feel pressure when gets out ? Criticize ? ● He is the only guy to score 6 tons in tournament finals. (if you feel tournament finals are crucial) ● He is top runs getter in World cup(if you feel world cup are crucial) (5) Sachin tampered the ball! ● It was an issue in which Mike Denness himself admitted that his action was wrong and was done at the heat of the moment with out the application of mind. ● It is very hard for a famous cricketer to defend himself when he puts himself in such a difficult position. It is the goodwill of the public to judge.

No way! I think that they have improved and still have a long way to go. 5 years from now they will be a top side cause they have a very young side. They have some really talented players. I was very impressed with their performance in the World Cup. They even sent team India packing early.

Because citizen of Bangladesh lack passion for the game unlike citizens of India, Pakistan & sri lanka. The same can be understood if we take the example of Hockey in India as well as in pakistan, both the countries have reached at its nadir because of decline in public interest in the game at large & good players are not coming up as mass appeal is not there. It is the public which makes players star & subsequently team starts doing better & better as rewrads are always tthere in that case.

The bangladeshi cricket team is still in its infancy.

It took India over 30 years to win their first test match...They will come good.

did you see them hit the ball out of the park against SA bowlers in the 20/20 world cup..give the tigers few more years and they will be numero uno

They will improve inshallah... I feel that they're doing well these days.
They've just begun so it would take some time to come up to a perfect form, and we should not forget that they've defeated big big teams many times.
They have great players like Ashrafull, Rafique, Mortaza, Nafeez... etc... but they lack experience allot, so when they play many matches they would be a better team one day.

I wish them good luck...
Cheers!

I think they show some promise though they don't convert it as well as they should.
Have they not beaten even Australia, South Africa among other teams.Have you forgotten India's defeat in ODI WC 2007.
I feel they will make an impact in another year or two.

it is because they have not been playing that long only 10 years and the other teams have been playing alot longer and also it is because they are getting better by the day

because they have not produced good quality & consistent players. they have match winner but not consistent players. they have one fast bowler. which is mushrafe murtaza. if ho is gets injures. no one in the team 2 get wickets.
