The best 3 ways ways are to

1 - learn how to ground energies, do it as a regular meditating & when needed.

2 - learn about your own spiritual self, aura, etheric, chakras etc - with knowledge come the ability to know that you are in control.

3 - say no thank you when feelings start - take control. If you need the sensations to be able to help others then ask spirit for a symbol or sign that you can recognise that represents the same sensation.

Just found out that I was an empath. and I was told to release the energy back to the spirit. this helps a lot when you are walking around with other peoples pain that you took on by accident. lol. When you get up an d go to bed g and P every day and meditation will help also.

If you're new to knowing you're an empath--do daily grounding and clearing meditations. the ones on this page helped me a ton when I first found out: http://www.newagestore.com/meditations/meditate.asp

Also, learn to recognize the signs of when you're taking on the emotions of others and learn to let the emotions flow through you, to release it as soon as you get them. You can do that by imaging divine white light (pure white light) flow down into the top of your head, through your entire body and out the bottom of your feet into the earth. Similar to grounding, but this can be done anywhere.

I wear a crystal on a cord so that it lays near my heart and transfer most of the empathic energy almost automatically without having to concentrate on it. At first though you may have to concentrate quite bit, but after a while it become autonomous.

I treat everything in life as a gift.
Be it a compliment, an insult intending emotional injury as with most of the answers on here, a threat, a loving smile.

You must realize you can't carry the weight of the world. You must realize that although you would like to help those around you, ultimately your own personal survival (not to mention sanity) relies on your ability to separate yourself from the problems of others. Empathy isn't a mental or physical condition, it's a personal reaction to your environment. Do what you can to take control of your situation.
