In California, you may carry a hand gun, as long as it is exposed and not loaded. Oh, but like carrying a sword, which is also legal, you are going to get stopped a lot by the police.

The weapon MUST be licensed to you. And it may (in most states) be carried out in the open or concealed. These are called carry and concealed laws.
Most jurisdictions have SOME restrictions on the carrying and use of a weapon, for instance in Georgia, even though you may have a permit to carry, you cannot bring a weapon into a stadium or other large concentration of people.
In Washington DC it is prohibited to HAVE a gun (small arms) PERIOD. Shotguns and long guns (rifles) must be either broke down or locked with a key lock. In New York City it is illegal to carry a gun without a permit and they don't give out permits to carry except to law enforcement officials.
It is a patchwork of laws all across the country and it represents the best of the early concept on the forming of this country of of the idea of States RightS. aka read the 10th Amendment.

That is totally dependent on your state laws. Some allow you to carry in the open, some allow you to carry, but the gun MUST be concealed, some don't allow you to possess a gun, period. There are some very large cities (as mentioned above, NYC) that have additional controls in place. You will have to check your local laws to find out for sure. If you have trouble finding anything, just call the local PD, an officer will know and shouldn't mind telling you.

Yes a firearm is not illegal to carry unless it is concealed. Brandishing a firearm is a different issue, that is where you have your firearm out and in hand. Most states have concealed carry permits that will allow you to carry a firearm concealed. I see a few people have answered and said that you can not have a firearm on your person, Think about people who are hunting people. There are new laws that prohibit carrying firearms in a few places, you should check with your local police department for those amswers

Depends on the state.
Vermont, for example, does allow open carry.
California allows open carry in some counties, if you have a concealed carry permit.

It depends on where you are. Check your local laws as the vary greatly.
Try going to the NRA website, it has an overview of the various state laws. If they do not have the information then they can direct you to the people that do.
