It will cool down and not allow you to turn it back on until it's reached a certain temp (it might turn on for a few seconds and then turn off).

Intel's chips are manufactured to prevent damage by shutting down if they get too warm. If you continue to use it, don't be surprised if you smell something burning.

If you're familiar with PC's, open it up and make sure all of the fans are spinning. If it's dusty, use a can of air to clean it. If the computer was store-bought, the paste used between the CPU and heatsink may be inferior - replacing it with some Arctic Silver 5 might help.

If you aren't comfortable, take it to a local repair shop or ask a knowledgeable friend for help.

depends on your PC's mother board and processor.

There was a time when AMD processors overheat and fried the motherboard dry. Really toasted the whole board and the processor.

On Intel design, they use a temperature sensor which shuts down your PC or laptop if overheating is encountered.

However, once AMD new that problem, they also included a fail safe circuit to protect the board and processor.

newer models of PCs or laptops and processors have better thermal control circuitry, and even the processor runs colder now. Intel's newer processors run at 80Watts and thenew generations coming out would have 50watts.

No damage whatsoever, unless you disabled the safety features in BIOS. Typically, when a processor overheats, it will throttle down its speed and voltage to bring temps down. If there is a cooler fan failure, PC will automatically shutdown.

However, if the overheating was in the power supply section there might be potential damage to other parts of the PC.

Could be wires preventing airflow to a number of components if it's ATA. Overclocking without proper cooling. Don't have enough fans for more airflow. It's probably the CPU overheating. If you've the presler dual core, it's know for overheating. Install new fans. Clean the heatsink. Lube the CPU again

Your Computer shuts down to PREVENT damage due to overheating. Of course, you should look for the reason why you computer is overheating and solve the problem. If you just wait and turn it back on when it is cool enough, it will shut down again and again until damage occur.
Open your case and check you fans and heatsink (CPU). They're either dried or stuffed with dust.
So some cleaning/repair and your computer will do just fine.
