The were first sponsored by soap companies, aimed at homemakers, who were seen as pathetic creatures who's only goal in life was the perfect laundry and spot free glasses. And oh yeah, they lived their passion vicariously through the stories they watched between wash cycles

Because the commercials in the 1950s - 60s used to advertise detergents "whiter than white" . They would advertise soap ( washing powder) by placing dramas of families - the perfect wife, the beautiful children etc but with daily problems ( dirty clothes) - but the soap would save the day. They were like 5 minute versions of the nowadays soap opera and also had the " to be continued" follow on adds.

Back in the sixties, most daytime dramas were advertised solely by a household soap manufacturer, such as Proctor and Gamble, and the storylines were heavy on drama, forbidden romance and tragedy, sort of like an opera is. Hence the term 'Soap Opera'.Today you have all kinds of advertisers, but the name still sticks as slang for what we now call daytime dramas.

The name soap opera stems from the original dramatic serials broadcast on radio that had soap manufacturers such as Procter and Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive and Lever Brothers as the show's sponsors. These early radio serials were broadcast in weekday daytime slots when mostly housewives would be available to listen, thus the shows were aimed at and consumed by a predominantly female audience.
