The best way I explain it to people is comparing it to a car engine. Just because you have a big V8 motor doesn't mean it'll be fast. adding things like headers, a good cam, pistons, heads, and carbuerator all contribute to making an engine fast. computers are the same way. they are only as fast as the slowest component. you want to ensure you have plenty of ram, fast hard drive(s), processor, chipset and sound card. the key to building a really fast computer is doing research and see which components run the best together. hope this helps.

well, in the hardware side, you should have a good processor, considerable amount of RAM, free hard drive space and like you said a good video card.
Regarding the requirment of the processor speed, amount of RAM and AGP memory, it depends on the intensity of the game.
technical settings within the game will be always better to leave it as defaults other than the audio stuffs like background musics and stuffs which can be changed as you prefer coz is not gonna effect the overall performance of the game.
again, the video resolution needed can differ depending on the games you play. you can refer the software and harware requirments what the perticular game recommends.

the comparable volume of reminiscence does not propose the comparable volume of overall performance. The 8600 GS is the extra desirable of those 2 card, yet neither card would be sufficient for working maximum recent-day video games. keep your cash and purchase an 8600 GT/GTS, or a 9600 sequence. The 8800 sequence is sweet, yet once you basically pastime in some situations it should not be worth it.

High end graphics cards let you play at decent frame rates even at very high resolution and highest quality settings (AA & AF enabled). Fast or overclocked processors minimize potential bottlenecks due to fast graphics acceleration. Large/ dual channel RAM also help in minimizing processing bottleneck.
