I heard somewhere that the AMD processor running at 3ghz is equal to an intel processor running at around 4.4ghz ( or somewhere around that). Is this true?

And thruthfully is it better to purchase an AMD or intel even though AMD is cheaper.

Depends on what you want to do with your Computer ... for out-and-out grunt it's hard to go past the current run of Intel Core 2 Duo chips ... AMD had a marginal advantage over Intel for a while with running cooler and throughput but now Intel (for the moment anyway) really has the wood all over AMD

It is not possible to answer your first question without more information. Due to the differences in the way AMD and Intel handle information, it is true that a seemingly lower clockspeed on an AMD, such as 3ghz, might be able to process information as quickly an Intel at a clockspeed of perhaps 4.4ghz but without knowing the chipset involved on each one cannot easily answer.

Intel has been shown to perform faster currently handling raw data such as one would find with gaming, business applications and so on with their top of the line core 2 duo and quad processors than AMD, however, these products also cost over $500 by themselves. AMD,however, is significantly faster than Intel when dealing with floating point operations and is especially useful for complex calculations.

In the end, unless you are looking for a top-end gaming system, Intel, or a computer to handle complex mathematical equations, AMD, you should pick the processor that you are most comfortable that comes along with the best packages on the computer because either way you have a good processor that can handle the majority of tasks the everyday user asks of it.
