I am 51 and have end stage emphysema. Since Katrina, I have lost all my furnishings and rents have doubled. I am on SSDI. Currently I live with my parents in their 70's way out in the country and it is not a good situation for me and the isolation is making me depressed. Also I am hypersensitive to chemicals and burning wood and that is going on here all the time. I need help with groceries and occasionally errands or going to the doctor if I feel really ill. Most other things I can do , it just takes me a long time. What can I do about housing and getting some help?

You say mental ability. What can I do, will myself well. I have a physical disability that keeps me from working and am housebound most of the time. I have a severe end stage disease. I have 10% lung function, you die at 5%. Just spraying air freshener in the house can make my function drop 2%. Logical suggestions please.

Check with and apply for Low income housing in your area. In CA it is called Housing and Urban Development (HUD) or Section 8.

Also, check with the Senior Disabled services in you area about housekeeping services for the senior and disabled. Often called in home supportive services (IHSS) They may call it something else in your state.

IHSS workers clean house, do arrons, some are even aloud to tranport to appts. The people are paid by gov. however if you work, you "might" have share of cost. Because you are on SSDI you might qualify.

Check the phonebook for the numbers in you local area

You need to start looking into assisted living facilities, That would greatly help with the housing situation, Your town or state department of social services should be able to help you. You need to get help from your doctors by them writing letters stating your problems and the best way that they think they can be relieved. The more that letters and documents you can get from your medical team the more likely you are to get the help that you need. When you go to the department of social services make sure that you have all of your letters and let them know why living with your parents isn't working out and that you need to find something that will give you independence and assistance at the same time. That's why I said you should try to get into an assisted living facility. The best way to do this is to get your medical team behind you and your requests. Good luck.

Sadly, the way our system is set up in the US, the preferred way to help people like you is in nursing homes. Very little money exists to help people live independently in the community in most states.

Forget HUD - there is generally a 2 year waiting list - many places much longer.

Contact the social services connected to your SSDI and say you are at risk of having to place yourself in a nursing home - what can they offer to prevent that?

Start visiting the nursing homes most convenient for your parents to visit - and get on their list. Adult foster care might be another possibility. I'm sorry you have such limited choices.

I have a disorder, i'm bipolar and go to a support group for it.

At the end we say something called the serenity prayer that's used by alcoholics anonymous, it goes "God, give me the strength to accept the things i can't change, the strength to change what i can change, and the wisdom to know the differences." So first, in response to your question, realize that you can't change some things as a disabled person.

You really should contact Habitat for Humanity's Camp Hope, Hands on New Orleans or any of those organizations for housing needs
