The ancient Greeks had a god for just about everything. Ares was their war god. The Roman version of that god was Mars. The planet was named after the god.

The name of Mars is derived from Roman god of war. It is a traditional belief. Moreover, Ares the Greek god of war is same as Mars.

Hindu mythology also relates Mars to one of its gods of war. In fact, there are too many chieftains in Hindu mythology. One such is hindu equivalent for Mars. In sanskrit it is known as "Mangala"

Ares is the God of War. You need to dig up some more info on the Gods if ya want to make a decent grade. There is tons of stuff on the web.

Mars is the name of the ancient Roman god of war. The Planet was named after him because of it's red color. All the other planets in our solar system are named after ancient gods. Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Neptune etc. are all names of ancient gods.
