These kind of questions can only be answered by him, or you, if you know him well enough. Find out what he likes, wants, or needs. It's less awkward that way on Christmas morning. If you actually know this person, it shouldn't be guesswork at all. He may love tools, but at the same time doesn't need any. So therefore tools would not be a good gift. It all comes logically.
