Honestly it is just a faze.. It's really not as bad as it seems. People often forget why mj is illegal and once again I'll remind them, it's a bureaucratic scam by the federal government dating back decades ago when the paper companies were in danger of being shut down because hemp was an alternative to paper. Plus Nixon was closed minded and didn't like people that smoked it. Notice the long term effect of one guys decision to "do the right thing"? Now there's wholesome non violent law abiding citizens in prison for doing something WAYYYY less harmful than alcohol our nicotine. Look a lot more people than you think do it. I don't condone peer pressure and I'm not saying your son should be doing it, especially if it's against his will, but he's in high school, it's 2012 and there are far worse things he could be doing. If you're worried he may go on to "harder" things, then tell him not to do those because then he'll be homeschooled. Also when I was high school and tried it I knew from the start it would be something I could control and eventually not do at all and that's exactly what happened. No parent likes to be told they are doing the wrong thing but listen to your instinct, I'm pretty sure you know your first reaction to call the school isn't the smartest thing to do because you wouldn't have asked us first..

Really, as others said your best bet is to stay out of it. I understand that you want to help but he needs to handle this himself. He could still be charged as well since the police have a witness.
Another thought though that I did not see in another answer. So right now his fate is being decided. In most cases expulsion is the EXTREME punishment especially so close to graduation. Kicking a kid out will just make matters worse.
So if the parents approach it right and the kid is sorry they may cut him a break. Dentention, probation, drug abuse classes, etc. Now if you start a petition or the school finds out a petetion is even being discussed they might make an example of him and expel him.
Plus a lot of kids are thinking about their future. They really don't want to put their name on something that could surface or end up on the net later. That would be a nice career killer. The younger ones who smoke would be silly to sign as well. What if they get caught later and the school whips out the petition? Plus since there is a list now the school knows who to keep an eye on.

Yes He can be expelled and basically he has broke the law a petition is a waste of time you will never win basically what your friend needs to do is go and speak with the teacher and the head say sorry and ask for forgiveness and assure them it will not happen again it is the only way it is Christmas they may be forgiven if not it is called consequences of their actions good luck Dave
P.S if he smoked the stuff on school property it is right but out of the site he may have a case but being adult about it is the best way

What your friend did was irresponsible and illegal. He could have gone to jail. The fact you are asking about expulsion means it hasn't happened yet. Obviously he is a senior and should know better. If he is expelled he may learn a lesson now that prevents a much harsher one in the future. I know being in school, you think that is everything right now. But over the next couple of years your perceptions are going to expand in ways you never dreamed of. Let the school deal with it without interfering. The most your petition will do is identify other weed smokers or weed sympathizers. Support your friend in another way. Remind him that in several months he will be expected to handle his life responsibly without someone looking over his shoulder all the time.

I would not petition....it only looks like you condone his smoking. At the very least wait until punishment is given before you start a petition. You do not even know what is going to happen yet.
The school will not look at a petition for supporting a kid who commited a crime (and yes it is a crime).
In case you did not know, on any school property it is a felony (not a misdemeanor) to possess drugs (even small amounts), which (depending on possessed amount) would normaly be a misdmeanor.
You kids (and yes you are still kids cuz you do this shyt) are dumb for not knowing that crimes can be changed from a misdemeanor to a felony just because you are on school property. This includes fighting, vandalism, theft... though some are brushed aside as kiddie crap we adults have to put up with.
It does not matter what the school does, it is not going to be worse than what the courts will do IF the school decides to press charges.
So if your friend doesnt go to juvie or prison (if he is 18 or older), you should be THANKING the school, not being pissed at them. He got lucky!!

I realize that you want to help your friend, but really you shouldn't involve your self in his situation. He made this mess for him self and he must face it him self.
He made a choice to use illegal drugs and he now has to face the consequences for the choice that he made. You shouldn't be attempting to petition for any thing.
If you want to help him tell him to get a lawyer for him self since that is probably what he will need.
There are some circumstances where schools have no choice but to expel students, when they feel that the student is a bad influence on others or that they may be of a danger to others.
No school should not cater to drug users, ever! Parents want their children in a safe drug free environment, they don't want their children exposed to any thing such as that. Only a nut would want their children to be exposed to drug users.
It's too bad that he has only 6 months left until he graduates, he knew this information and still he made the choice to use them. He already sounds like he's on the wrong path, that is so sad. He needs help with his problem and maybe this will be how he gets that help. He either needs to get into a drug treatment program and get help or he will one day end up in prison as most do.
I don't wish any bad upon your friend, but you must now think about your self and what your future is going to be should you get labled as a drug user as well. What would it do to your life, if you haven't thought about that then you may want to do so. How it could impact your life, how it could change your life forever for the worst.
Over the years I have seen a lot of lives ruined by drug use, it isn't a pretty picture seeing people sitting in prison. It also isn't pretty to have to watch their family members coming to visit them in prison. It distroys the entire family unit and all those around them who know and love them. Just some food for thought for you to think about. That is where your friend is heading unles he changes his ways, you can be sure of it.

Nope you cant really do anything, they will most likely take a look at your petition and laugh.
Pot is illegal, and ive know quite a few kids being expelled. Theres always the adult school, or he might have to come back for a semester next year.
If he is smart he will learn.

Find new friends. This one is a loser. He was under the influence while driving(grounds for a DUI), and under the influence while at school (grounds for expulsion). Welcome to real life- it has consequences. Tell him to get his GED after he is expelled- I doubt they will take him back next year.
And yes, the school has every right to expel him. If he showed up drunk to school would they expel him? Of course. This is the same thing.

Stupid is as stupid does.
Your friend did something stupid. Expulsion would hopefully be a wakeup call for him.
Where expulsion is concerned, I hate to pull another cliche out of the bag, but, don't do the crime if you can't do the time.
If you feel your friend has done nothing wrong, neither of you are "ready" to graduate. Stay in school. Learn some more.
**EDIT**
It doesn't matter WHERE he was. He BROKE the law, AND he got caught doing it. He was stupid. And stupid is costly.

My friend had weed in school as well as a pocket knife. He only got suspended for ten days, that was for the weed only. He's back in school now, although he still does drugs. Another one of my friends made a bomb threat to the school, and he's returning in April. I'm sure things will work out fine for your friend.
