A was given a folding knife on my 20th birthday, however I am confused over its carrying legality. From what I know there is no problem carrying a folding knife in California. However, the blade length of the knife I was given is 6" (!). Is it still legal to carry?
I would like to remain with no criminal records.

There are a couple main thing to keep in mind with knives.

Folders are perfectly legit, even when fully concealed in your pocket or wherever.....as long as the blade is not extended and locked in place.

You can keep a fully sized bowie knife on your hip, so long as its in a sheath and not fully concealed.

No gravity knives, no switch blades over 2.5 ", no ballistic knives, no belt buckle knives.

errr... Yes... you have to be more descriptive.. if it can be opened simply by the flick of the wrist then you cant carry it.. if you actually have to move the blade with a thumb screw you can carry it... it depends on the county as well... in my area i can walk around with a machete on my hip as long as its exposed open carry. In LA you cant carry a fixed blade longer than 3 inches.. also a new law says pocket knives should have a detente toward staying closed.. which means if its open halfway it should close shut.. i wouldn't worry i carry a knife all the time.. if you do get stopped you will be asked why you carry a knife.. "self defense" isn't always a legitimate reason... i do work for a contractor so one is always in my pocket.. look around online for more knife laws or call a cop shop if your ever unsure.. hope i helped..

California does not have a state law concerning blade length of a folding knife as long as it is not a switchblade or gravity blade. many cities and counties in California have their own laws regarding knives. you can not carry on school property or
university property unless blade is under 2.5 inches. check all of the following site: http://www.donath.org/Rants/StateKnifeLaws/

Depends on the design of the knife.

The link below has the rules.

If its not a switchblade it should still be legal. you just can't carry it concealed.
