(3x - 5)(x - 1)

because...

(use FOIL)
first. outer. inner. last.

F. 3x times x is 3x^2

O. 3x times -1 is -3x

I. -5 times x is -5x
(-3x - 5x = -8x)

L. -5 times -1 is 5

so 3x^2 - 8x + 5 = (3x - 5)(x - 1)

essentially, you have two factors:
3x - 5
and
x - 1

:D

Well, I think what they want you do to is first factor it, then say one of the two factors.

I'm guessing 3x2 means 3 times x squared: 3x^2 is how you symbolize that BTW.

So

3x^2 - 8x + 5 this isn't one of the easy ones that you don't need to think about, but it comes out to

(3x-5)(x-1)

(3x-5) and (x-1) are the factors, so I guess you just put one of those as the answer, since it's asking for "one of the factors."

ok Generally speaking any quadratic equation: ax*2 + bx + c has solutions which are given by the following formula: x = [-b (+-) sqrt (b^2 - 4ac)] / 2a In you case we have: 3x2 - 8x + 5 a = 3 b = - 8 c = 5 Thus: x = [8 (+-) sqrt ((-8)^2 - 4(3)(5)] / 2(3) This gives x = (5/3) and x = 1 So (1 + p) = 0 and ((5/3) + q) = 0 p = -1 -----> (x - 1) q = - (5/3) -----> (x - (5/3)) (X - 1) Is the correct answer !!!

Factoring is an idea you might be familiar with from multiplication. Numbers that can be multiplied together to get another number are its factors. For example, 4*3 = 12, so 3 and 4 are factors of 12. However, they're not its only factors; 1, 2, 6, and 12 are other factors of 12. (Another way of defining a factor is a number that goes evenly into the number you're factoring.)...

hope that helps

since 3 + (-8) + 5 = 0, 1 of the factors is x - 1,

(ax^2 + bx + c = 0, if a + b + c = 0 then a(1)^2 + b(1) + c = 0 then x = 1 is a root then x - 1 is a factor),

you have to complete the square since there are not to factors that can multiple to equal 5 and also those to factors have to be able to add and equal 8!

If you are not comfortable with trial and error, try ac method. It is quite simple.
