So I went to Petco today and they wouldn't sale me 10 fish in a 10 gallon tank. The employee said that he did not feel like seeing the fish die in such a small tank and said that he will not sale it to me... Are they allowed to do this?

I believe it is 1 inch for every gallon of water.

The fish that I was planning on buying were 29 cent Goldfish that were being sold that they people can go fishing with it or to feed their other fish...

So I believe ME buying it and putting it in a tank... no matter how small is saving it?

Yes, a store can refuse a sale to anyone for a legitimate reason. And it sounds like they had a good reason to do so.

Gold Fish 2 in per gallon of water. Gold fish are very dirty fish you would have a very hard time keeping the tank clean if you had 10 in a 10 gallon tank. What you must not forget is goldfish grow really large and grow relatively fast. So you may only have 10 inches today however in two weeks you have 20 inches in a 10 gallon tank. We must not forget that they GROW.

Almost ALL people NEVER keep a goldfish for a long time as they do grow really large but they produce bacteria that will eventually kill themselves no matter how many times you change the water. From my experience some of them will die anyway. Just tell them you have more than one tank. Or even better head to Walmart they have really cute feeders for cheap (10cents where I live). I've seen people buy 50 at a time to feed to other animals (poor fishies!!!!) so they wont question your want for 10 goldfish. Also some pet stores will ask how long you have had the tank running and wont sell fish to you if you say less than a month because the tank needs to start producing natural bacteria. So again little white lie its been going for 3 months. Learn to play the system. Good Luck.

Good for Petco.

First of all, concerned hobbyists have been petitioning chains and petco specifically to act more humanely. So it is in their best intrests to advertise what happened to you, not be embarassed.

Second, goldfish as mentioned need a lot of space. I have 3 comets that I got at petland 2 yrs ago ina 55 gallon, and they;re going in a pond this spring - 6" each and fat fat fat. Petco has much better filters than you do, but they still aren't exactly innocent. It's illegal to sell goldies as feeders in the UK now, because it is inhumane, unhealthy for them, fish they are fed to and any fish they come in contact with.

Read about fish online, it is at least as easy as checking this web page - then if you can manage it, buy a tank, cycle it and get some appropriate fish.

Each goldfish (those little tiny ones) need at least 10 gallons of water all to themselves.

Yes, they're crammed into the tanks at the pet store, but that's temporary, and, like you mention, they are soon to be food for other animals.

Pet goldfish need space to breath properly. They're also messy fish that need lots of water.

Feeding them to other animals is natural. Letting them suffocate in a tiny little tank is cruel.

Yes, they can refuse to sell you the fish, and they were right to do so.

If you want 10 fish, get small ones. Guppies, Zebra and Leopard Danios, neons.

10 regular fishes will have a much better life in your 10 gallon than being crowded with thousands of other goldfishes in a 30 or so gallon that Petco keep them in. Even if your golfishes won't live for very long, it is still a good short life.

I've been those poor goldfishes in those crowded tanks at petco, it's ridiculous!
go tell petco that.

Do your research BEFORE trying to buy. Goldfish are 1 fish per 10gallons. And that's just a general rule, and pretty small.

It's 1 inch per inch of TROPICAL fish. And even then, 10 inches of fish in a 10 gallon is pretty much overstocked.

For those 10 goldies you're trying to buy, you'd need a minimum of a 100gallon tank. They grow to be a foot long or more - were you aware of that?

So really, it'd be more humane for them to be eaten by other fish than to live in that tiny tank. At least they'd die quickly by being eaten, rather than slowly dying from stunted growth and ammonia burns.

Yes, they are allowed to do this - and they were right. The staff member who did this deserves a prize.

damn just buy less fish! Or buy a bigger tank. Oi veh. If that's too many fish in such a small tank and that will eventually kill the fish then of course so!

I believe businesses do have the right to refuse service to anyone. Also, if the employee has a valid reason to believe that the fish will die I'm glad he cares enough to protect their little lives. They are living creatures after all. It's not just like you're trying to buy inantimate objects.
