On your hard drive there are jumpers to switch the master/slave setting. Where they are and how they are set depend on the hard drive manufacture. Take out your drive and look on the top of the drive there should be a picture on it showing you how to set the jumpers.

There is no telling the BIOS. It is automatic if jumpers are set properly and only one drive is set as primary. Need to also get the ribbon connected properly. Should go from the MB to the fist connector on the ribbon. The stripe goes next to the power connector.

the end of the cable is usually the master dependant on which pc you have, ide is ( trying to remember ) master at the end with jumper on master and slave next slot down , jumper set to slave, or cable select both drives and the bootable one at the end

If we talking about IDE HD then it's done physically on HD itself by setting one HD as slave and second as master.
To do that you will need to insert jumper in proper place.
Look at the HD for Jumper settings.
BIOS will detect changes automatically and will display it for you.

Cheers, DS
