the English Carling Cup which is also known as the English League Cup is a straight knock-out competition similar to the English FA Cup. however, the competition is open only to the 92 Football League teams from the English Premier League, English League Championship, English League One & English League Two. all of them represent the top 4 football leagues in ENGLAND.

the draw is made at random & all Football League teams except teams from the English Premier League will enter the competition in the first round. teams which qualified for the second round will be joined by teams from the English Premier League except teams which competing in the European competitions at the same time.

teams which compete in the European competitions will enter the English League Cup in the third round along with the 2nd round winners.

all matches from the 1st round up to the quarter-finals stage are on a straight knock-out match, with extra time and a penalty shootout if necessary.

the semi-finals consists of two legged matches played on a home & away basis with the aggregate score being used to determine the winners. If the scores are level at the end of the second match extra time is played. If the scores are still level at the end of extra time the team which has scored more away goals goes through. If the number of away goals is level a penalty shootout is used to decide the winners.

the English Carling Cup final is currently staged at the new Wembley Stadium in London with extra time and a penalty shootout if necessary to decide the winner. the winner is rewarded for a place in Europe for the following season if the team did not finish at any of the European place thru the respective league.

The Carling Cup is also called the League Cup. (Carling is the sponsor similar to the way that Sprint is the sponsor of the NASCAR title). It is similar to the FA Cup in that it is a tournament conducted in rounds rather than a league. It differs from the FA Cup in four ways.

First, the FA Cup is sanctioned by the Football Association (the governing body of English soccer). As such, even teams from the "amateur" leagues are eligible to qualify for the FA Cup. The Carling Cup is sanctioned by the Football League(the governing body of the second, third, and fourth level of English professional football). As such, all 92 of the spots are reserved for the teams in the Premier League (20 spots) and the Football League (72 spots).

Second, in the early rounds of the FA Cup (through the quarterfinals), if the match is tied at the end of regulations, a second match (a replay) is held at the home of the visitors in the first match. Only if the second match is tied at the end of regulation is there over-time. At the same stages of the Carling Cup, if the match is tied at the end of regulation, there is overtime (officially added extra time). If the match is still tied, the match goes to penalty kicks.

Third, in the semi-finals, the FA Cup is decided by a single match at a neutral site. In the semi-finals, the Carling Cup is decided by the aggregate score from two matches (home-and-away).

Fourth, while the winners of both Cups get a bid in the UEFA Cup, there are different rules if the winner of the Cup qualifies for the Champion's League. In that circumstance, the runner-up of the FA Cup gets the UEFA Cup bid, but the bid for the Carling Cup is lost and goes instead to the fifth-placed team in the Premier League.
