Make it easy to shop.
Use tables (borrow patio tables, card tables, sawhorses and wood). People NEVER buy clothing that is lying on a tarp or blanket. Hang whatever you can, and fold everything else neatly, sorted by gender and size. If it has a hole, is personal (school trip, vacation, year), or has a stain or missing buttons, just pitch it. A few junky pieces of clothing will bring down the 'value' of everything else at the sale.
Put large items near the street so that they attract attention. Dressers, table/chair, exercise equipment, etc. If you set up everything inside the garage, many people will never get out of their cars. You can put one dresser out, with a sign that says 'More Pieces Available', but be sure you get something out there that attracts attention.
Mark sizes on all clothing, use a closepin or safety pin to keep pieces together (outfits, pairs of socks). Consider a bag sale for clothing -- all that fits in a grocery bag for a set price.
If it works, or doesn't, say so. Bring out an extension cord so that you can prove that a mixer, radio, etc. works. If it does not work, lable it that way. Same for games and puzzles -- if all the pieces are included, etc.
Put all the related things together -- all the kitchen stuff, all the baby stuff, whatever. Realize that things like books, vases, mis-matched dishes/glasses and knick-knacks will bring in very little money.
If your home is smoke/pet free, a big sign on any upholstered furniture (couch, bedding) can make a sale.
Books, videos, CD/DVDs -- put a price each, and offer a discount on multiples ($2, 3 for $5).

Advertise that you will have all this stuff. An idea for advertisement is to put an ad in a local paper or you can hang up signs around your neighborhood. Also all the stuff that you don't sell you can sell on eBay or you can sell it to a local resale shop. You also may want of think about hanging a few signs in stores that there will be a yard sale with all this stuff. One last thing that you can consider is if you have a lot of stuff you might even want to take it to a flea market. A lot of people go to those. Also if your community has a community yard sale you may want to have a yard sale that day when everyone is out and looking for bargains. Also they will be tired and hungry so your food sales are probably going to do better in a flea market or community yard sale! Good Luck either way, I hope you have a fun time!!!!

Start with low prices. People going to yard/garage sales are looking for bargains. Hang clothes up with the size marked on them and the price. You will have a mess within 15 minutes if you don't. Use as many signs as you can to draw attention to your sale. Be ready at the advertised opening time. Be prepared to have your feelings hurt. What you think is valuable, is not to others.

sort it by what it is..kitchen stuff..clothes man or womans separate..hang some of the nicer items if you can ...put them on a tarp or a blanket but separated by gender...line all the shoes up...if you need to sell all of it...i wouldnt price any of it unless you want a firm price for an item..i sold a crap load of junk and made over three hundred but i sold boxes of clothes for a buck cause quite frankly i didnt want it anymore...that was probably the biggest yard sale as far as moving the most stuff in one day...i had over six truck loads and had less than one when i was done..i donated the rest

put in plastic boxes with different colors for different areas and tag before put out for sale because otherwise you'll be answering a million questions. Put out a sign that says "not responsible for accidents" to protect yourself.
