I'm trying to meet up with an old friend who lives near boston, MA, and I live near Philadelphia, PA..... does anybody know any interesting cities where we can meet halfway so one of us doesn't have to make the drive?

Take Amtrak to New Haven and hang out at Yale. No driving by anybody.
NYC is another option but more expensive.
{EDIT} Traveling to the Mohegan Sun Casino requires a bus ride from the New London, CT Amtrak Station which is much closer to Boston than to Philadelphia.

NYC is a good place to meet. Just a few hours from Philly... a little longer from Boston. Either traveler can get a train or bus pretty inexpensively as well.

New York City is probably close to half-way. Another option would be somewhere in Connecticut.
If you don't mind going a little farther than your friend - Mohegan Sun casino could be fun!
