they are right, the water is most likely the problem, but just in case, are you washing with dirty socks? Wash only white shirts together with oxyclean, see if that helps.

Its unlikely to turn it white. What will happen is that you will get some greying parts of the fabric that is in the bleach and some bits may go completely white. But it will not turn a black shirt into a white shirt. If you put a tee cloth or similar into a bowl of bleach, it will fade but the colours don't come out completely. Same story with a shirt.

Add some water softener like Calgon or washing soda to hot wash water, along with your detergent. Let the shirts agitate for 3 to 5 minutes before you add bleach. Put your sunglasses on when you take them out because your shirts will be dazzling!

I have a feeling it is the mineral content in your water. The harder your water is the worse the color gets. All you can do is after washing them is to set them out in the sun, but kinda hard when it is freezing outside. Try some oxyclean or a different brand of shirt

Try using BLUING...Mrs Stewart's is the brand I see & use. It keeps the "yellowing" and probably the greyness from sticking.
It also helps relieve the sting of ants, if you get that problem.
But, yeah, a water softener. Costly...
Maybe you should try a different detergent/soap too.

hemommy is correct, it's most likey caused by the minerals in your water. I would recommend getting a water softener installed in your home, not only will it help with this, but your clothes will last a lot longer and your sinks, showers, bathtubs etc will stay cleaner and be easier to clean.
