Why do people buy things they can't afford? Than they sit around and complain that they are poor. Wake up! There are real poor people out there. If you have a job than you should manage the money you have. When it runs out don't keep spending, duh!!

So the question is. What do you do with family members that can't manage their money and think that you should give them money. Isn't that enabling them? What's wrong with working a second job? Sometimes I think that some of the elderly in this world are poor simply because their children have drained them of their retirement. Please comment.

Sorry guess it doesn't have much to do with marriage and divorce. Screwed that up.
It's amazes me when the child who asks for money says, "I can't work weekends or a second job, because I need to have fun, I'm young".

I don't lend money to people that cannot manage theirs. Everyone knows this and will not ask. I work hard for my money, save when I want something and live within my means and I sure am not going to give it away to someone that doesn't.

There are definetly many circumstances exactly as you are saying.

Managing money is a talent. Really. Many people simply cannot manage money. If everyone could manage money .. then there just would not be a problem with it, would it ?

In this day & age, it takes a lot of money to simply survive. Especially for the middle-class elderly.

I know for a fact that a lot of the average senior citizens of today - who managed their money & saved all during their years have a difficult time right now in their older years. I have seen it. This includes professional people. The senior citizens go through most of their money on doctors & prescriptions quickly when they get to be elderly. Then .. their finances get to the point where they barely can afford the prescriptions they need because their saved money has been depleted by medical expenses. Then .. life trickels on down for them to buy their prescriptions .. or buy groceries ... a choice for them to make. Eat .. or take a pill ... which one will it be today ? This is real & true. Then .. it gets to where they cannot take their pills daily .. they have to take their pills every other day .. due to the expense of the medication. Then .. when they have to have medicaide .. on some States .. the Federal Government takes all their belongings .. like their home place - their bank accounts .. anything which has a title, etc ... then BOOM .. their American Dream is gone. The home place they paid for all their life is gone to the governement .. or .. it might be a home place which was handed down through the years from one generation to another generation.

So .. children do not have to drain the elderly of their retirement .. medical expenses do a pretty good job of it.

There are also people who cannot manage their money ... and it does not matter how much help/money they are given by people who attempt to help them - they can never be helped. And .. in many cases - folks such as these may not try to help themselves.

There tons of circumstances for all sorts of people.

But I do tell you this ... it is awful what our middle-class elderly has to endure.

I think all Representives, etc .. should be given the same medical plan as our elderly. They should know the scared feeling of not getting their medication .. and of not receiving medical attention which often claims their lives for the lack of .. they should feel the feeling.

OK .. I will now get off my soap box.

I am sure you can tell that I feel passionately about this.

This is a huge issue in my family. Both of my parents are on SSI so they do not make hardly anything combined. They are usually broke half way through the month and my sister and I are left to help them out the rest of the month. I don't mind normally, but I have a family to take care of ...and lets face it, military pay is not that great. I do not want them to suffer, but I will if they don't? Anyway, big problem..my mother smokes and this extra cash is usually for that. Neither my husband or I smoke! We are supporting someone elses bad habit. So in the end..what's left. Watch your mother smoke your money away, watch them starve, or when you dont' help out..they hang it over your head that they did it for you all of those years..now its your turn. Don't know???

Life is a series of choices and sadly many now think they need stuff to look sucessful.
Some of the richest people I know ( and I mean several millions) drive old cars and live modestly.
That's why they are rich
Read the book "The Millionaire next Door" it's easy reading and really answers your question well

well in a reverse to that, my mother borrows from family and makes them feel guilty when they say no. She doesnt work a real job, and just gets by. So its not just the kids doing it.

There is some truth to what you say and some other people just have a whole string of bad luck.

Unfortunately, schools are not teaching money management.

Joy to you..

You are right! Raise spoiled. Even if you are poor or rich you should love your spouse and kids.
