When it comes to really important issues, there is no difference whatsoever between them. For example, in the latest bill to spend billions upon billions of US dollars on the war in Iraq--a war that has been a complete and utter failure from the get go--the Democrats voted the same as the Republicans. And the main reason, of course, is that they are all told what to do by the big military money interests, plus they get a few personal threats from the FBI or CIA to keep 'em in line, like good little puppets. It's amazing that most Americans haven't caught on to the way the game works. Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee may spell their names different, but you can't tell one from the other.

I think your conclusion is pretty close to correct, although I'm not sure you got there correctly.
In every political forum, there is more consensus than people realize. The two sides have to come together to pass budgets, put out necessary laws, etc. The conflicts get most of the attention, but that has a lot less to do with the actual business than you'd think.
Personally, the Iraq voting situation is amazingly complicated with all sorts of implications -- Congress doesn't want to look like it is neglecting the troops, even if individual members are against the overall policy.
I know you have your mind pretty well made up on this one. I'm not discounting the role of money and contributions in the process, but there have been plenty of legislators who have stood pretty tall in this whole process.

Members of both parties : lie, take bribes, vote for pork, etc. However, The Republicans help mainly the rich, and the Democrats help the poor somewhat. When the rich got that big tax cut under Reagan, the Republicans spent it overseas...buying French Villas, Greek yachts, etc. The Democrats spent their money in the USA, donating some of it to schools, housing the homeless, etc. The Dems protect, and fund, Social Security, while the Repubs try to defund, and elliminate it. The Dems protect, and broaden, the Constitutional rights of people, while the GOP undermines the Constitution, and violates peoples' rights. The Dems spend more domestically-funding schools, repairing roads, etc-while the GOP spends more abroad; fighting no win wars.

They approach things in a slightly different manner but both are left of center. The Democrats are just further left. In a republic, it is hard for people with radical opinions to get elected (thus the Democrats recent dismal failures running radical left wingers) so the tendency is to appease the radical wing but not so much as to fail in the elections. This is why the last three Presidents were moderates within their respective parties. But you are right; not a whole lot of significant change happens when partiy in power changes occur.

Ever wonder why they blame one side?
When both were running the same house?
