There still exists a small endangered population of this species, the brown bear, in the mountains of Western Macedonia and Epirus, and their main habitat is the so called "Vallia Calda" (Warm Valley in the local Vlach language) territory of Pindos mountains.
Unfortunately there is no protection by the state, and their number is getting smaller every year, the Society created for its protection doing absolutely nothing to help them survive.
Apart form illegal hunting, they suffer of lack of food and space, their habitat being invaded by excursioners in the weekends. So they cannot even reproduce easily.
In addition, until the early 90ties these bears were captured by gypsies, who "trained" them (torturing them) how to perform "dances" and that was a popular show in greek villages.

Artemis indeed was symbolized by a bear as well, and this is the reason why the little girls dedicated to her Temple in Vravrona (Attica) were called "arktoi" - bears.

There are also other species of mamals in danger exctinction, as all kinds of deer, woolves, and wild cats, and no measures for their protection are taken.

Yes there are Brown Bears in Greece. The forests of the mountain ranges of northern Greece are home to Europe's largest population of the protected brown bear.
Brown bear is the largest
terrestrial mammal in Europe,
measuring 1.7 - 2 m. in length
and weighing 60 - 250 kg.,
depending on the sex and the
season of year. In nature, bears
live for approximately 25 years.

Yes, check out www.arktouros.gr, it is an organisation that protects bears in Greece. If you ever go to Nymfaio, a lovely traditional settlement in Northern Greece with very nice hotels, food, horse riding and a ski centre nearby, you can visit a shelter with bears living in their natural habitat.

Wow what a pic!
Yes there are still brown bears in the north of Greece
as well as (I think) wolves - foxes - badgers - hares - usual wildlife! Not out run with squirrels like in UK but some of the islands have more than their fair share of rats (rodents not people) like Zakynthos

Yes, there is a large population of bears protected by the Arcturos NGO, and the North Greece -South Balkans species is taken care within the organizations facilities.
Equally, a not very large number is living freely within protected areas in the North of Pindus mountain region although recently they have been spotted further down south on the Thessaly region. However, the survival of the species is still endangered.
