It helps give a better appreciation of anatomy and physiology, since it elevates it from something abstract and cartoony (in the textbook) to something real. When you look at a textbook, you only see diagrams of individual systems, but when you do a dissection, you can see how all of the systems connect together in 3D, and really get an appreciation of how efficiently so many systems are crammed into such a small space.
When I did fetal pig dissections (once in high school Physiology class, once in undergrad Bio), we did it over the course of a few months. We started by opening up the abdominal and chest cavities, and focused on a different system each time. We usually ended up removing the organ in question, and dissected it separately. We also had to remove some of the skin and label muscles. Our professor would have us place numbered pins in different structures to show that we had correctly identified them (he referred to it as the 'golf course').
For several of the dissections, we were given cow or sheep organs to look at as well (especially the brain, since the fetal pig brain is 1) hard to get out 2) too small to label effectively and 3) pretty much goo at that stage of development).
I was afraid that I'd be grossed out before the first dissection, but it wasn't so bad. Fetal pigs aren't the same as piglets, and the ones we had really weren't cute (they were all white and wrinkly). The insides were all orderly and distinct too. There wasn't any blood either, since the blood is removed when it is preserved and replaced with latex so the arteries and veins stand out. To be honest, the worst part of it all was the smell of the preservative (air freshener helps, to a certain extent - our professor would spray it directly on the pigs sometimes).
All in all, it was a good experience. I've always been biology-minded, but for me, it made me realize the complexity and order in life, and convinced me that I wanted to study and pursue a career in biology (I'm in biotech now).

you can learn lots from pig dissections ! you can see the locations of the organs in the body, how the structure/shape/size/etc. of the organs relate to their functions, and you can learn more about the general anatomy.
in pig dissections, i believe you would cut through the abdomen and locate the different organs. depending on your teacher, you might crack open the skull to take a look at the brain. i know, it's pretty gross..but after dissecting cadavers, i'd say the pig is a breeze. hope you enjoy it, if you get the chance!

I live in Illinois and I never herd of anything like that iny my HS, and my school has tons of classes and people. What class did you hear it was for? And I'm sure you can leave the class for awhile while they do it. The most I ever herd of in my HS is you get to dissect a frog, a goats eye, and a small shark.

Animal rights whackos aside, there is not subsitution for dissection to really learn and understand the biology of an organism. Looking at pictures or manipulating a program isn't the same thing. I learned a few years ago that my sons school did a 'virtual dissection' of a frog. He came home more confused than before. I took a trip to the local pond, got a few tools at the local United Art & Education and we had our own dissection. It was a good refresher for me, and he learned a hell of a lot more than that moronic PC virtual dissection. He went on to ace the biology test with the best score in his class. Go figure.

it prepares u for university ? and its a good learning experience.
Upon dissecting u will also realize that those diagrams in your textbook describing the kidney, liver, heart etc .. looks nothing like the one ur gonna see while dissecting.

Because it would cause trouble if you were to dissect one of your classmates.
