It's kind of a long story, so here it goes...
My last day of school in junior high, we were signing up for our high school classes the following school year. I always wanted to play in the band but had no experience. Then the line "No experience necessary" caught my attention, so I signed up.
The first day of school my freshman year, I was in a new school and only knew one or two kids in the band. I'm sitting on the steps between both sides of students when the band director came out and introduced himself to us. After speaking for about ten minutes, he looked at me and asked what instrument I play. I said "I don't know". The room roared in laughter. He said "what do you mean you don't know". I explained the 'no experience necessary' and "here I am". He then decided that I should play the tuba. Not able to read music that well, I was put in a sound room where I got to practice for a month.
Then one day one of the valves was getting sticky, so I unscrewed the cap, pulled the valve apart and looked at it and said "hhhhmmmm" and shoved it back in its hole without lining up the little tiny keyway and jammed it useless. Needless to say, it was determined study hall was more appropriate for me.

i played the trumpet for 2 years only. I decided to play that because they wouldn't let me play the clarinet or the saxaphone. i quit because i hated it.

I do play in the band. I play the flute. I don't believe it's for "geeks", the stereotype, because all types of people are in the band. And they're not all smart, believe me. lol. :)
