If I set my profile to private will I lose all my friends or will they be just grandfathered in?

You'll still have all your friends, and they can still talk to you. nothing changes, the only thing that does is that there wont be any strangers looking at you

You won't lose your friends. Your friends will be the only ones who are able to see your full profile.

You friends will still be able to access your site. Setting it to Private is to stop strangers from accessing it.

It means that you keep all your friends, but people who aren't your friends can't see your profile. I think they can still message you though, so it shouldn't be too hard befriending other people you know.

you will keep the friends you have now, but it will be harder for non friends to talk to you or add you as a friend
