Wow! You have some great answers already. Here are a couple of additional ideas as well.
www.howtoknit.com has both knitting and crochet instructions
www.lionbrandyarn.com has both knitting and crochet instructions as well as free patterns.
Joann Fabrics has a really neat DVD called Crochet Made Easy that is $7.99 and is put out by Red Heart Yarn. The DVD is great and is intereactive. It is very easy to replay a certain spot. You first watch the step. thena you do it while watching it. tan you do it on your own. It is great and this is actually how I learned. I did not care for their website but love their DVD. I have bought several copies for folks with hooks and yarn for gifts. Remember, you can go to joanfabrics.com and sign up to get a 40% off coupon. Than take the coupon to the store and you have a really cheap way to learn. It is like having a teacher right there in the room with you. She shows you and asks you questions.
Good luck! Crocheting is very relaxing. I think you will enjoy it once you get the hang of it.

Hi:
I am a beginner-intermediate crotchetier. When I was learning a friend recommends me this site: http://www.anniesattic.com to buy patterns, crochet related things and learn how to crochet.
On Annie's Attic homepage you will find an area titled: LEARN CROCHET. On the drop down list choose Basic Stitches and it will show you not only step-by-step instructions with diagrams, you will also find Quicktime videos that show you how to perform every stitch.
The Stitching Guides are sorted alphabetically, not from beginner-to-advanced. You need to start with the basic stitches: Chain stitch, Double crochet, Half-double crochet, (you can find the the Single Crochet instructions selecting Single and Variations from the drop down menu) and then review the Learning to read crochet patterns page. This page also give you the Abbreviations, Symbols and Additional Terminology that you need to understand and read patterns and some of the instructions. Then all you have to do is to follow one EASY pattern. (On the Double crochet information you can find a link to "Practice this stitch", you can do one square of this Baby Granny Afghan as practice or you can crochet all the afghan with this stitch!)
You can learn other stitches from the site as they appear on the patterns. You may find my instructions a little overwhelming but be patient. Once you start the rest is very easy.
The site will teach you how to read patterns and they give you every day a FREE "Pattern of the Day" (everyday I copy and paste each pattern (photo and information) and save it as a document file on my computer). There you'll find everything from toys, doilies or ornaments to scarves, afghans or garments.
Believe me, you will be doing beautiful crocheted things in no time!

There are lots of videos on the internet if you look. Most of them are on youtube. However, one website that I have found very helpful is Annie's Attic. They have videos for the more complicated stitches. I had a hard time learning to crochet from pictures--I actually rented a DVD from the library that had instructions. Once I saw it done, it was so easy to do and I haven't stopped since.

The way I learned to crochet is by going to wal-mart and buying a skein of yarn and a 10 dollar kit that had a book and everything else you need to get started. It is called I taught myself to crochet and the directions are very easy to understand plus you don't have to worry about buying anything else until you are ready to :)
