the other had no injuries. they were fed well cleaned & had h2o. my kids r devistated as they were their pets

If these are hamsters, you might want to repost this under "Rodents" to get more answers - this somehow got into "Fish".
From my experience with them, hamsters are best housed individually or they can fight (especially if you had two males). Just because the one didn't show obvious injuries, it may have had internal injuries, or internal parasites. The one hamster could have been taking advantage of the other because of it's weakness, and the other decided it was time to fight back, but already had enough of an injury/infection that it later died.
