In the winter how do you properly wash your car? If it's too cold to hand wash your car, what do you do? I took my car to the car wash all summer but this is my first year of having a car in the winter so I don't what to do exactly. Is there a certain time of day I should wash it or should I wash it all all.

It's fine to use a wand type car-wash in the winter. There is a little secret to keep your doors from becoming iced closed during the winter. Go to an auto-parts store and buy a couple tubes of silicone ignition module grease and wipe a thin coat on the soft foam liner around all the doors.

Silicone is an inert formulation that will not rot the life out of rubber, foam, plastic or rubber. If you can't find any, silicone spray works but doesn't last as long as the grease.

In the winter I just go to the do it yourself car wash and just spray it off with clear water so it gets the salt off every couple of weeks and let it dry by itself in the garage, if you leave you car outside you will have to do it during the day or dry your doors out and you should be ok.

If you have a garage, just take it through a brushless car wash before parking it in the garage. It should keep it warm enough that it doesn't freeze.

If you do not have a garage, try to do it in the warmest part of the day.....hopefully when it is above freezing. If it is really cold, you may want to dry the car right away.

i prefer to wash my vehicle before noon, when the sun is out but not too hot. wearing those long glove will help a lot. you know, the ones that "poster moms" back in the day used to wear. gloves that went up almost to your elbows. they help a lot.

in case you cant find those gloves, a co worker of mine uses warm water with suds to wash the car, rinse it with a hose then immediately pulls it into the garage for drying with a chamois....

take it to the automatic car wash - definitely after road salt has been used. wait till the streets have dried or every 2-3 weeks. The underbody is the important part to keep clean because of salt.
