I heard some older kids at school joking about how the "dumb little kids still believe in santa".
So I went home and asked my folks face to face. They looked sad to think I had learned there might not be a generous, jolly old fat man who loves little kids.
They fest up, but I could tell they were sad, they hated to think their little boy was growing up. They made me promise not to tell little sister. I didn't. She found out the same way I did.
I told my kids that santa was a wonderful magical story about a man who loved kids. And I let them know it was just a wonderful story but that a lot of people like to believe in something as unselfish as that so they had to promise not to tell other kids that santa was not a real person. They did okay with that and they recently told me they are glad I didn't tell them the "santa clause lie". They had as much fun at Christmas as kids who believed he was real person!
It IS a bit fun to read or hear stories about a jolly old fat man giving kids some happiness. Guess I still have a soft spot for the concept. About five years ago we even splurged on a santa suit and had a chubby neighbor come over for awhile just as a lark. We let him wear the suit home and they had a blast with it too.
AHH Christmas, so many happy memories of family get to gethers. And kids trying to stay up watching for santa. hah hah hah. I love it!!!!!!!

My parents never told me Santa wasn't real. In fact to this day my mom won't say that Santa isn't real. We have had a few Christmases when some anonymous Santa has brought us presents and we never found out who it was. She says it was the spirit of Christmas ie Santa. As an adult I have had someone bring gifts one Christmas with a note from Santa. I know it wasn't toys for tots or anything like that because it came weeks before Christmas. I still don't know who it was because I never told anyone that we weren't doing so great. So I have told my kids the same thing. During Christmas people are a little more generous and want to do things out of the kindness of their hearts without reward. Santa gives them a way to give charity without the other person losing face. I think it's kind of neat.

My best friend and I used to have endless conversations about the logistics of it. Santa sounded implausible, yet how could our parents afford so many presents? I guess we were around 9/10 at the time too! I think we just became too cynical in the end!

I saw the school janitor changing into a Santa suit when I was in second grade. I put 2 and 2 together and realized that everyone else was a janitor in a Santa suit.

my dad had gotten a video camera and thought he was "the man" always video taping everything!
about a week after christmas (in the first grade) my sister and i decided that we wanted to watch "a movie"
well dad thought he was being clever by hiding the tape in a "scary" movie box.
needless to say we caught the whole thing on tape! :( we saw my mom, stepdad, dad, and a friend of the family decorating the house, and dressing up the friend like santa. i think that was one of the saddest days of my life. i wish i wouldnt have found out until i was older.

I didn't know for sure, but I was around 3 Santa Clause came to our house. He gave each of us kids a toy then left. When I ran outside the house to wave good-bye- He drove away in a volkswagon bug.

I found my presents hidden in the basement, on Christmas day those presents were tagged from Santa. I confronted my mother who tried to convince me that she had to hold onto them for Santa because they were so big. Did I really look that dumb? I mean honestly. LOL

Osmosis. No one ever flat out told me. Watching "A Miracle on 34th Street" might have influenced me.
Playing Santa is still fun for me. Don't tell me I can't play because I won't listen.
