They're five games away from being able to make that claim, but, as of right now, they look like the best collection of talent ever assembled in the NFL.
They have the franchise QB in Brady, the deep threat playmaker in Moss, the speedy possession receiver in Wes Welker, a ballhawk in Asante Samuel, and above-average work happening on both the offensive and defensive lines.
They do have an aging defense and a little bit of an underachieving problem with Laurence Maroney and the running game, but, when you can throw the ball all day, the running game loses a bit of importance.
Bottom line, I fully expect to see New England finish the regular season 16-0, and hoist the Lombardi Trophy when it's all said and done. That, alone, will give them nearly-undisputed "best team ever" status.

dude are you kidding me??!!!
the best ever?? is this a joke? Theyre the best this year no doubt but with past teams like the Steel curtain, the 1980's Niners, and the 90's Cowboys I would have to say that I would take any of those teams in theri prime, they would destroy this years Pats, and the Parcells coached Giants, and the Ditka coached Bears would have also beat them with their dominant defense, I mean they barely beat the Eagles with a backup QB and the Ravens who just lost to the winless Dolphins so best ever um...I think not genius.

They have to win the Super Bowl first.
The 2001 Seattle Mariners set a record of most victories in a regular season but they were eliminated in the playoffs. Are they the greatest ever?

Don't put the carriage before the horse. Let them go undefeated and win it all before that title is thrown around.
But they are doing a damned good job of tying records thus far.
Tied the NFL record for most players scoring touched.
Tied for the second team to go 14-0 and that was just this week.

If they go 19-0 they will be and you cant argue with what they have done in the last 7 years which has made them a modern day dynasty which doesn't happen often with the salary cap and free agency.
