Skip the expensive heavily marketed brands (Rainbow, Orec, Electorlux, etc). I've tried them and wasn't impressed. After trying several brands, I went back to my Kenmore cannister vac. It is very powerful, very durable, and picks up everything. We have ceramic, laminate and carpet and I can't stand to use anyone else's vac. I even bring it with me when going to help someone else clean. It is an good price for a quality machine. Oh, and skip the department store specials too. . .they are useless.
Oh, and if you can catch the year end model clear out, you can get them at an even better price. Always buy Kenmore on clearance. They just change the colors and drop the price for that. :-)

In my opinion the best is a National Super Service ,model M1 also known as a PIG. However at about $1900 it is probably not going to be your first choice. For around the house a Shop-Vac is economical And gets the job done. And can be used for water.
