tatoo while breastfeeding? It's a no-brainer to know it's not safe during pregnancy, but I was wondering if the whole toxic-shock thing would be relevant in breastfeeding. If its safe to use tampons...then wouldnt it that be safe? I'm just wondering.

I know a lot of women who've been tattooed while breastfeeding, and none of them have suffered any ill effects.

Having said that, though, a lot of tattoo artists won't tattoo a breastfeeding mother. There's a risk (as always) of infection, which may then be passed to the baby, or might just leave you weakened (which is never a good state for a nursing mum). There's also speculation that it can put the baby off the milk, due to the hormones released during the tatooing process. Finally, both your skin chemistry and healing response can be different during breastfeeding.

So, all in all, I'd say that it's not really recommended. But if you're really keen, and your baby's over 6 months (though I'd wait until over 12 months), you could go ahead so long as you pumped some milk to freeze, just in case, and would be happy to pump & dump aftewards, if necessary.

There's a tattoo I'm dying to get, but will wait until my son has either weaned himself, or until he reaches the point where he's nursing only once a day or so.

Hi!
My mother is a nurse, and I have discussed this sybject with this, wether tattoos influence breastfeeding. The answer, medically is that it can even poison the baby. But, there is heard a new theory, that claims that a tattoo influences brestfeeding only if you get it from your belly and over. For example, it is dangerous if you get it on your arm, but it is not if you get it on your ankle. I am not sure if this is proven though. But, I think it is safer that you finish pregnancies and breastfeeding before getting a tattoo. It is better to have some body art that is not dangerous.
I am sure for what I said in here.
Hope this helps!

"Most tattooists will not knowingly tattoo a pregnant or breastfeeding mother. It is suggested that mothers wait at least until the child's first birthday to give their bodies a chance to recover completely from childbirth before getting a tattoo."

Glad you asked because I was wondering too and just now looked into it.

I would say it isn't safe, because when you get a tattoo you aren't able to donate blood for a while. So that tells me it puts something into your system.
