what is higher M.D., Ph.D?

PhD is the higher degree. MD is considered a professional degree -- while the PhD is a research degree.

The only cool thing about it being a higher degree is that at commencement exercises, MDs have to wear a mortarboard, while PhDs can wear cool tam hats.
