BMW's when maintained properly are usually above board and don't have many problems.
These are expensive luxury vehicles with amenities which other vehicles don't have. Unless you own a BMW, you really don't understand what others wish they also had. They just see the car, but don't know about the extras and the feel of the drive.
For that reason, cost is subjective. What is expensive? When I was young, I couldn't wait to change my own oil. Now, I don't mind sipping a cup of coffee and reading a magazine while an expert does it for $90.
My BMW's never break down, and never have in the 8 years I have had them. Instead, they are properly maintained according to the schedule.

My '02 530 is one of the least expensive cars to maintain that I have owned in my 25 years of driving.
My experience with BMWs, I'm on my 4th, is that they do not break down as their reputation traditionally claims. Find yourself a good non-dealer mechanic so repairs and service are fairly priced. Remember, you want to service them with only BMW parts, they are high performance machines that will suffer if they have inferior parts used.

yes BMW's are more expensive to maintain but they dont need the maintenance as often
most cars require service/oil changes every 3,500 miles. BMW's only require service/oil changes every 15,000 miles
but it is worth it. nothing else drives and feels like a BMW, and the cost of ownership is well worth it in my opinion.

BMW's are known for its luxury, the reason why it would be costly is because i think the replacement parts are not in the states. It all depends how the owner uses their BMW's because really they are one of the most well built cars.

You have a trade-off. A BMW is one hell of a car to own and drive, but you do have to pay up, when something breaks or needs to be fixed. I've learned to do a lot of the repairs myself, but mostly I still have to take it to a dealer. Even though they are expensive to own, I love the way they drive, and wouldn't buy any other car.

BMW's free maintenance program is quite comprehensive, and should cover you well. Just that they will only change your oil once every 15,000 miles... which is a little too much in my opinion... so I would at least do one (at your own cost) at 7500 miles.
Meanwhile, 50,000 miles isn't a lot of miles, so chances are, you'll only see reliability problems beyond that. So I would always encourage everyone to try to extend their new car warranty at the time of purchase.
I just helped my buddy change out his oil in his 2003 Z4. He follows the maintenance program to the dot... so he was due for an oil change in the next 800 miles... I drained out his oil... he only had a little over 5 quarts of old oil! He lost almost 2 quarts in the course of 14200 miles. His is a very typical case - so definitely try to change your oil at least once in between scheduled oil changes.

what i think about this is:
people that complain about luxury car maintenace prices are the people that shouldn't be buying luxury cars--because that's just it, a luxury car is a "luxury" and NOT a necessity.
if people want to drive BMWs then they need to understand they're going to eventually pay BMW maintenace prices; not only are you paying for car parts that may be more expensive than "regular car" parts you are also paying for more expensive labor charges. why? because it is a luxury some people can/will afford.

They are a piece of work! Even my 2000 323i is racking up the maintenance bill. Oil changes run around $80-100. And that's the least of it.

I own a Audi and my brother own a BMW. They are both incredibly expensive to keep (repair costs and regular maintenance cost).
I would NEVER buy either one again.
Good Luck.
